Form 2290 Filing Walkthrough
This guide walks you through setting up your business, starting a Form 2290 return, adding taxable vehicles, reviewing the tax, making the IRS payment, and downloading your stamped Schedule 1.
What You'll Need
Keep these details nearby before starting:
- Legal business name
- Employer Identification Number (EIN)
- Business address and contact details
- Signing authority information
- Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
- Taxable gross weight
- First month of public-highway use
- Logging vehicle status
Taking a minute to check this information can prevent errors during filing.
Sign In to Your Dashboard
After signing in to Simple2290, you'll arrive at the dashboard. From here, you can add and manage businesses, start a new filing, and check active or completed returns.
If this is your first filing, begin by adding your business.
Add Your Business
Click Add Business on the dashboard. Enter the business name, business type, and EIN.
The business name and EIN should match the information in IRS records. Form 2290 requires an EIN; a Social Security number cannot be used instead.
Next, enter the details of the person authorized to sign the return:
- First and last name
- Daytime phone number
- Title or position
Then provide the business address, phone number, and email address. Fields marked with an asterisk are required.
Third-Party Designee
This option is only needed when you want another person to discuss the return with the IRS on your behalf. Turn on Enable Third Party Designee, then enter the person's name, phone number, and five-digit PIN. Leave this option turned off if it does not apply.
Once everything has been checked, click Save Business.
Check Your Saved Business
Your business will appear under My Businesses after it has been saved.
Check the business name, EIN, and business type before starting the return. Open the business details if you need to correct or update anything.
Start a New Form 2290 Filing
Click New Filing to open the filing wizard.
Choose the business, select Form 2290 – Heavy Vehicle Use Tax, and select the correct tax year.
You'll also need to select the vehicle's first-used month. This is the month when the vehicle was first driven on a public highway during the tax period.
The page includes two optional choices:
- Final Return: Select this if the business does not expect to file Form 2290 again.
- Address Change: Select this if the business address has changed since the previous filing.
Check the selections, then click Continue to Vehicles.
Add a Taxable Vehicle
Choose Taxable Vehicle Information, then click Add New Vehicle.
A taxable vehicle generally has a taxable gross weight of at least 55,000 pounds and is used on public highways.
Enter the following information:
- Vehicle Identification Number
- Taxable gross-weight category
- Logging vehicle status
Enter the VIN exactly as it appears on the vehicle records. Next, choose the correct weight category. Taxable gross weight generally considers the vehicle, its usual trailer, and the heaviest load normally carried.
Select Yes if the vehicle qualifies as a logging vehicle. Otherwise, select No.
Review the information and click Save. Repeat the same process for every taxable vehicle included in the return.
Review the Vehicle and Calculated Tax
Each saved vehicle will appear in the taxable-vehicle list with its VIN, weight category, logging status, and calculated tax.
Simple2290 calculates the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax based on:
- Taxable gross weight
- First month of use
- Logging vehicle status
Review every vehicle before continuing. If something is wrong, use the edit icon to correct it. Remove a vehicle only when it should not be included in the return.
Make sure:
- Every taxable vehicle is listed.
- Each VIN is correct.
- The correct weight category is selected.
- The logging status is accurate.
- The calculated tax appears under the correct vehicle.
When the information looks right, continue to the next step.
Review Schedule 1 Information
Every reported vehicle should appear on Schedule 1 with the correct VIN. Check the vehicle list carefully before submitting the return.
Schedule 1 is commonly needed when registering a heavy vehicle or renewing its state registration. A VIN error can cause problems when you present the document to the state.
Choose an IRS Payment Method
If tax is due, choose one of the available payment methods:
- Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW)
- Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS)
- Credit or debit card
Review the payment instructions shown for your chosen method before continuing.
Submit the Return
Review the business, vehicle, tax, and payment information one final time. Once everything is correct, submit the return electronically.
Form 2290 is generally due by the last day of the month following the vehicle's first month of public-highway use. If the due date falls on a weekend or federal holiday, it moves to the next business day.
Download Your Stamped Schedule 1
After the IRS accepts the return, download the stamped or watermarked Schedule 1.
Save a copy with your business and vehicle records. You may need it when registering or renewing the vehicle with your state.

Credits and Taxable Vehicles
Taxable vehicles and credit vehicles may be included in the same filing when the tax due is greater than or equal to the available credits.
If the available credits are greater than the tax due, the system will stop the filing from moving forward. Review the credit amounts or add the missing taxable vehicles before continuing.
When reporting taxable vehicles without credits or suspended vehicles, Simple2290 will calculate the tax due and allow you to continue to payment.
Quick Check Before Submission
Before submitting, confirm that:
- The business name and EIN match IRS records.
- The correct tax period and first-used month are selected.
- Every taxable vehicle has been added.
- All VINs and weight categories are correct.
- Logging vehicles are identified correctly.
- The calculated tax has been reviewed.
- The payment method is correct.
- Schedule 1 shows the correct vehicles and VINs.
Once these details are correct, your Form 2290 taxable-vehicle return is ready to submit.
