Form 2290 Rejected by the IRS? Common Reasons and Solutions

Form 2290 Rejected by the IRS? Common Reasons and Solutions

You finish entering your truck details, submit Form 2290 and expect to see “Accepted.” Instead, the IRS sends it back as rejected.

That can be stressful, especially when you need your stamped Schedule 1 for registration. But a rejection usually does not mean you are in serious tax trouble. In many cases, it comes down to one detail that does not match IRS records.

Here are the most common reasons this happens and what you can do next.

Why Did the IRS Reject Your Form 2290?

Your Business Name and EIN Do Not Match

The business name on Form 2290 must match the name connected to your Employer Identification Number.

Even a small difference can cause a rejection. For example, the IRS may have “Jackson Transport LLC” on file, while the return says “Jackson Trucking.”

Check your EIN confirmation letter and enter the legal business name exactly as it appears there. Do not use your DBA or a shortened business name unless it matches the IRS record.

You Recently Received Your EIN

A new EIN may not immediately appear in the IRS e-file system. The IRS generally recommends allowing about four weeks for a new EIN to become available before e-filing Form 2290.

Make sure the number is correct and wait for the IRS records to update. You cannot use a Social Security number in place of an EIN.

The official IRS Form 2290 page provides current filing instructions and requirements.

The Wrong Tax Period Was Selected

Form 2290 does not follow the regular January-to-December calendar. The 2026–2027 HVUT tax period runs from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027.

Before resubmitting, make sure you selected the correct filing period and first-use month.

The VIN Was Entered Incorrectly

A VIN is easy to mistype, particularly when you are entering information for several trucks. A standard VIN has 17 characters and does not contain the letters I, O or Q.

Compare the VIN on your return with the truck’s title, registration document or VIN plate.

If the return was rejected, correct the VIN and resubmit it. If it was already accepted with the wrong VIN, you will need to file a VIN correction instead of submitting another original return.

The Return Was Already Filed

Sometimes a truck owner submits the same return twice because they are unsure whether the first one went through. A duplicate return for the same vehicle and tax period may be rejected.

Check your account before starting over. If the first return was accepted, you may simply need to download your stamped Schedule 1.

If you need to add information or report a weight increase after acceptance, review the available Form 2290 amendments.

The First-Use Month Is Wrong

The first-use month is the month when the truck was first driven on a public highway during the tax period.

It is not always the month you bought or registered the truck. For example, if you purchased it in September but first used it on the highway in October, October is generally the first-use month.

Check your operating records before correcting the return.

What Should You Do After a Rejection?

Do not immediately prepare a brand-new return. First, read the rejection message carefully. It will usually include a short explanation or error code showing what needs attention.

Then follow these steps:

  1. Compare the rejected information with your official records.
  2. Correct the name, EIN, VIN, tax period or other identified issue.
  3. Review the full return one more time.
  4. Resubmit it as soon as possible.
  5. Check your account until the status changes to accepted.

Once the IRS accepts your corrected return, you can receive your IRS-stamped Schedule 1.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a rejected Form 2290 count as filed?

No. A rejected return has not been accepted by the IRS. You must correct the error and resubmit the return.

Can I receive Schedule 1 after a rejection?

Yes. Your stamped Schedule 1 will be available after the IRS accepts the corrected return.

Why was my return rejected even though the EIN was correct?

The business name may not match the IRS record exactly. A recently issued EIN may also need more time to become available in the e-file system.

Will I have to pay the filing fee again?
